and working at home
As a general rule, the cost of owning a home
based business or renting a home based business' own home is a
personal one. Except for certain specific expenses
(such as mortgage interest, real estate taxes, and
casualty losses), a home based business owner cannot
deduct personal expenses on tax returns.

However, if a home based business owner
uses a portion of his or her home for home business use, the
home business owner may be able to deduct a number of
expenses. These deductible home business expenses include rent
or depreciation, mortgage and real estate taxes, maintenance,
and utilities. These home office expenses are collectively
referred to as home office deductions.
